If you are only going to win 1 tournament a year, it should be the most important. After failing to win a tournament this season, Jon Harshbarger, claimed the 2007 Century Classic on Lake Palestine this past weekend. Jon blew away the field by just over 9 lbs. He weighed a 5 fish limit each day for a total weight of 29.30 lbs. His fish were caught mostly around boat docks on a Jig. The best jig colors he found were Blue & Black and Black, Brown & Amber. Jon also claimed the Day 1 big bass with a 4.46 lb largemouth. His total winnings claimed for the weekend were $587.00 for 1st place & $150.00 for big bass. This was Jon’s third Century Classic victory since 2000. (Cedar Creek – 2000, Bob Sandlin – 2004, & Palestine – 2007)
Finishing in 2nd place was the only other competitor to weigh a limit of fish for both days, Mr. Robert Hargrove. Despite his consistency his fish didn’t include the quality that it took to win. He weighed a total of 10 fish for 20.22 lbs. He caught his fish shallow, on his typical Chicken Rig w/ a trick worm & lots of smelly jelly. He was paid $375.00 for 2nd place.
The 3rd position found Dwayne Shamburger who weighed in 8 fish over two days for a total of 17.70 lbs. His fish ate both his Shakey Head Jig, & his Carolina Rig. He was given $305.00 for his catch.
A 1st year Century member, Kyle Norrod, earned the 4th place payout of $235.00. He caught 8 total fish for 16.25 lbs. His fish were caught on a white crankbait w/ a black splattered back in shallow water. He also caught fish on a Shakey Head Jig around docks.
The 5th place finisher, Craig Dowis, weighed 8 fish for a 16.01 lb total. Craig’s fish were caught on a Chartreuse colored Spinner bait. He was paid $211.00.
Another 1st year member, Luke Schultz, was the 6th place finisher. He managed only 5 fish for 2 days weighing 13.93 lbs; however, one of those fish tipped the scales at 6.49 lbs. His big fish was the day 2 Big Bass and earned him $150.00, while his 6th place finish paid $187.00.
Century Tournament Director, Joey Deans, finished in 7th place. He weighed 6 “Brack Bass” for a total of 12.11 lbs. He caught his fish on Spit Fire Jigs in Black & Blue and Cypress Craw. His payout was $141.00.
8th Place was earned by Yarik Malyuta with his 6 fish, 12.00 lb total. He caught his fish on a Wacky worm & on a Texas rigged Creature Bait. He will cash a $118.00 check.
In order to finish in 9th place, Nick Carroccio had to catch 3 fish each day for a total weight of 9.66 lbs. His fish were caught mostly on a Shakey Head Jig around Boat Docks; however, he did catch a few on shallow crank baits. While his fishing was purely skill, His luck came out at the end of the tournament where he was chosen to receive a Free Entry into the next Century Tournament.
Rounding out the Top 10 money winners was Philip Webb. His 5 fish for a 9.59 lb total was enough to separate him from the unfortunate folks who didn’t earn a payout. He caught his fish on a Spitfire Finesse Jig around Docks. He also earned $95.00 for his efforts.
